Municipal Governments Networking Meeting held on January 27
There is an increasing demand for the supply of “SGEC-certified sustainable domestic timber". Recognizing that expanding their use would be highly effective in revitalizing the local communities, last year SGEC/PEFC Japan conducted a survey on the situation of forest certification, forest environmental tax, and subsidy programs in local governments. Although the number of municipalities that responded to the survey was not high, SGEC/PEFFC Jaoan held an Municipal Governments Networking Online Meeting in order to create an opportunity to share information and provide reference on how to expand local certification and link local production for local consumption and external consumption to final consumers in the future. Dr.Shiga, former professor at Tsukuba University, Mr.Shimada, chairman of the Japan Forestry Association, and a representative of Odate City, Akita Prefecture, gave lectures on their proactive initiatives. As the participating municipalities found it helpful regardless of the status of their initiatives, SGEC/PEFC Japan will plan this event again.

9th Brand Mirai☆Mini Seminar
“SDGs X Domestic Timber and Sustainability” held on March 18

In the first half of the session, Mr. Higo, Secretary General of the Council for Promoting Domestic Timber Use and Protecting Japan's Forests introduced a new initiative to distribute “sustainable domestic timber” by introducing a different supply chain approach from the conventional standing tree market. Mr.Higo emphasised that in order for Japan to become a market where only sustainable timber is traded, it is important to promote “domestic timber with new value,” and the value of forest certification in this context. Following their initiative, Mr. Hayasaka of the Forestry Agency's Wood Use Division gave another presentation on the revised Clean Wood Act, which was amended two years ago and is in effect in April of this year. This was a well-timed Mini-Seminar, with several questions raised, indicating the high level of interest among attendants.
