EUDR-aligned SGEC Forest Management Standard Endorsed by PEFC
The revised SGEC Forest Management Standard, The ”SGEC Standard Document 3: 2025 Sustainable Forest Management -Requirements,’ revised taking into acount of  the EUDR deforestation-free requirements, was endorsed by PEFC International as of June 30.

As the main revissions, in line with EUDR, the definitions related to forest conversion have been modified and new requirements has been added for maintaining an inventory of geolocation data related to the certified area where forest and tree based products are harvested. With PEFC's endorsement, this SGEC standard has become an EUDR-aligned one. It will come into effect in the near future.


The 10th Brand and Future☆Seminer ”SDGs X Basic Knowledge of Forest Certificatio System and DDS” conducted

This year's annual webinar, “Basic Knowledge of Forest Certification Systems,” featured a detailed explanation of DDS in response to frequently asked questions. More than 180 people from certified and non-certified companies participated.

Promotion Consultation in Tottori Prefecture 
Tottori Prefecture, which has been actively engaged in promoting the use of certified timber, held a training session on forest certification two years ago. This time, consultation for promotion of certified wood material was held on June 9, both in-person and online.At the consultation, the Tottori Prefectural Promotion Division reported on the status of group forest certification within the prefecture. This was followed by a presentation from SGEC/PEFC Japan, which reaffirmed the principles of the SGEC/PEFC certification systems, with a particular focus on group certification.
The lively discussion, including questions about costs and practical implementation, reflected strong local interest. With the active support of the prefectural government and the local forestry cooperative to make Tottori Prefecture known for certified wood, further promotion is highly anticipated.


Malaysia Highlights the Importance of Forest Certification at Osaka Expo

On June 12 and 13, a “Pocket Talk” event was held at the Malaysia Pavilion of the Osaka Expo. With lots of people joining in, representatives from the timber industry and forest certification sectors, including Mr.Ng Boon Kuan,Chairman of
the Malaysian Wood Moulding and Joinery Council (MWMJC), took the stage to deliver presentations.Topics included the importance and objectives of forest certification in Malaysia, as well as current trends in the use of certified timber within the industry.SGEC/PEFC Japan was also invited and exchanged opinions with speakers and participants. During the session, Mr.Ng Boon Kuan expressed his hopes for increased timber exports from Japan. It is anticipated that similar events will be held in other countries in the future.

Students Learn About SGEC/PEFC Forest Certification
In June, SGEC/PEFC Japan welcomed visiting students from junior high school from Aichi Prefecture, as well as high school students from Okayama Prefecture as part of their study tours (this was the second time this high school visited us following last year). In addition to lectures introducing PEFC and SGEC, which originated in Japan, explanations about the mechanisms behind certification systems were provided. Students were also given juice packaged in PEFC-certified paper, serving as a practical example of how individuals can support forest conservation through daily consumer choices. It is hoped that this initiative will continue to expand nationwide, reaching even more students across Japan.


The social media campaign “Make a Sustainable Future Happen with SGEC/PEFC” was held from June 9 to June 22 as part of Environmental Month in June. During the two-week campaign, over 30,000 people participated, SGEC/PEFC Japan's X account gained 10,000 new followers, and the total reach exceeded 30 million. Participants shared positive reactions such as, “I'll take various actions for the environment.” “I want to continue doing what I can for the future of forests.” and “I'll choose and use environmentally friendly products.” This campaign is expected to raise awareness that everyday consumption choices can contribute to forest conservation, encouraging individuals to take the first step toward making conscious choices. SGEC/PEFC Japan will continue its efforts to protect the future of sustainable forests.
