The former Director-General of the Forestry Agency Mr.Naoto Maeda is the new Chairman of the Board
On June 27, 2023, at an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Directors held following the SGEC/PEFC Japan General Meeting, Mr. Naoto Maeda (Chairman of Rindou Anzenthe  Association, former Director General of the Forestry Agency) was elected as the new Chairman following the retirement of the former Chairman, Mr. Satoshiko Sasaki.

PEFC Chain of Custody and Trademarks standards – 2013 versions extended to 31 December 2023
Important update for companies still certified against the 2013 version of the PEFC Chain of Custody standard. After 31 December 2023, certificates issued against the 2013 version of PEFC ST 2002 and PEFC ST 2001 will no longer be valid.

Online trademark application procedures and electronic contracting
SGEC/PEFC Japan has introduced an online procedure to further improve the efficiency and convenience of the trademark application process. This reduces the time and effort required to fill out application forms and provides a faster service for certified companies. 
In addition, the introduction of electronic contracting eliminates the need to mail documents, greatly speeding up the flow from application to contract completion. If your company has not yet applied for a trademark under the new standard, please do so as soon as possible.

The Nigiyakana Forest Project Expansion! Initiatives of the Josho Forest Certification Council
The Josho Forest Certification Council (Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture), together with a total of 14 companies, including S&B Foods INC. Ueda Factory and Art Metal MFG Co., LTD Industries, is promoting the Nigiyakana Forest Project
With the support and participation of companies, sustainable forest management, and environmental conservation are making further progress.


The first 20 houses in Japan to receive SGEC project certification in Touma Town were completed.
A ceremony was held to celebrate the SGEC project certification on July 26, 2023, at Touma Town Hall in Hokkaido, Japan, as a town wood utilization enterprise.
Under the sponsorship of the Touma Town Forestry Association, 20 newly built detached houses utilizing locally produced wood obtained the SGEC project certification as houses.

New Kanuma City Hall, the first overall SGEC project certification in the Kanto region!
New Kanuma City Hall Building acquires SGEC project certification. Since its full opening on May 8, 2023, the new government building, which uses 235 m3 of SGEC-certified wood from Kanuma, is a new landmark of Kanuma, a town of trees, and is promoting efforts to realize a decarbonized society.


SDG Company Visit Learning Initiative
On June 1 and 14, 2023, we gave lectures to junior high school students as part of the "SDGs Company Visit Study."
This study focused on the importance of forests, the impact of deforestation, and the forest certification system as a solution to global warming, and provided students with specific initiatives to solve this problem.

Ishikawa Forest Park, a new sustainable facility completed with SGEC-certified wood!
Ishikawa Forest Park (Tsubata-cho, Kahoku-gun, Ishikawa Prefecture) opened a new observation deck, field athletic facility, and BBQ area in May 2023, which are made of SGEC-certified wood, with a focus on harmony with the environment. The use of sustainable materials is expected to contribute to the global environment and the future.

Auditors from Vietnam came to Japan to train at SGEC's FM audit.
From June 22 to 28, Do Thinh Thang and Ha Van Thien, auditors from Vinacontrol, Vietnam, witnessed FM audits in Sakuho Town and Kitaaiki Village, Nagano Prefecture, in cooperation with the Japan Forest Technology Association as part of their training program. 
As the global demand for PEFC-certified wood from Vietnam expands, there is a need to increase the number of auditors and improve their auditing skills. Their training is an important step toward meeting PEFC's international standards.

The 5th Less Pollen Cedar Tree-Planting Festival 
On October 15, 2023, SGEC/PEFC Japan and the Council for the Promotion of Forest Certification will host the tree-planting festival in Hanno City, Saitama Prefecture, marking this year's location for the annual event.
This year's tree-planting festival will be held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of SGEC/PEFC Japan.

SGEC/PEFC Japan 20th Anniversary Forum to be held on Wednesday, October 25
This forum will provide an opportunity to reconfirm the role of forests and forest certification in creating a sustainable society and to consider the further potential of forest certification as an important means of protecting and nurturing forests, which are an essential resource for society.
