PEFC Forest Forum 2024 in Paris


The first PEFC Forest Forum, the successor of the PEFC Members Meeting, was held in Paris, France from May 13 to 16. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of PEFC, and the meeting also included a commemorative event. At the meeting, the progress of EUDR and REDII was reported and lively discussions were held, and PEFC ST1004 "Requirements for Certification Bodies operating Certification against PEFC endorsed Forest Management Standards" was adopted at the general assembly on May 15.
At the report session of the member countries, SGEC/PEFC Japan informed of the situation of certified materials use at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan
On the final day of the Forum, participants visited the forest of Chantilly near Paris, which is being affected by global warming, to see the various its impacts and hear explanations from experts on countermeasures.
The next forum is scheduled to be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in May 2025, marking a long-awaited return to an Asian country.

Wood Fiber from SGEC-Certified Forests Used for the Uniforms of Medical Team at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan

Clothes made from wood fiber from SGEC-certified forests were adopted for medical team uniforms at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.  This is the result of a highly regarded sustainability initiative.
The raw wood for the fibers was collected from SGEC-certified forests in Kawachinagano City in Osaka Prefecture; Kamikatsu Town in Tokushima Prefecture; Neba Village in Nagano Prefecture; and Amakusa City and Oguni Town in Kumamoto Prefecture. The uniforms made from the wood fibers will be lightweight, durable, and provide a comfortable working environment for medical staff. These local efforts have yielded positive results and are garnering significant interest as a contribution to a sustainable future.

Timber from SGEC-Certified Forests Used for Sunpu Castle East Gate Bridge

Sunpu Castle Park East Gate Bridge was rebuilt with timber supplied from the SGEC-certified forests of the Shizuoka City Forestry Research Association.This innovative initiative is anticipated to contribute further advancement in SGEC/PEFC certification.

New Craft Brewery Using SGEC-Certified Wood

Sekinemokuzaikogyo Co., Ltd., located in Minami Aizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, has recently constructed a craft brewery utilizing SGEC-certified timber and commenced commercial production. This innovative initiative is anticipated to spur further advancement in SGEC/PEFC certification.

Tree-Planting Event “UE Forest 2024” Held in SGEC-Certified Forests

On May 25, a tree-planting event, "UE Forest 2024," was held in an SGEC-certified forests in Aoki Village. The event aims to revitalize the community and promote sustainable forest management. During the event, participants planted 4,000 larch saplings across approximately 1.6 hectares of land.
Unicharm Corp. Begins Selling PEFC-Certified Sanitary Products

On World Environment Day, June 5, Unicharm Corporation, the first "Champion Company," launched the Sofy Hada Omoi and Sofy Hada Omoi ORGANIC series (Trademark Registration No. 5499600). These are the first sanitary products in Japan utilizing PEFC-certified materials.

APP Group Strengthens its Commitment to Global Sustainability

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), a PEFC-certified company, has been welcomed as an official member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), an international organization dedicated to addressing environmental challenges, poverty, gender equality, and more. This recognition evaluated APP's sustained commitment to sustainability since 2013.
At the same time, Ms. Elim Sritaba, Chief Sustainability Officer of Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas, was honored with an award at the UN Women 2020 Asia-Pacific Women Empowerment Principles Awards for her outstanding contributions to sustainability.
With these awards, APP's sustainable business activities are expected to be further strengthened.
