Yoshirou Yamada Receives MAFF Award for His Outstanding Forest Management Practice Including Promotion of SGEC Forest Certification

Yoshirou Yamada was awarded the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) Award at the Forestry Management Encouragement Ceremony held on November 7 at Iino Hall in Tokyo, with the attendance of His Imperial Highness Prince Akishino, President of The Japan Forestry Association.

In 2005, as Chairman of the Forest Certification Subcommittee of the Shizuoka City Forestry Research Group, Mr. Yamada promoted SGEC forest certification and obtained the first SGEC certification among Forestry Research Groups in Japan.
The award was given in recognition of his outstanding efforts, which included expanding the certified forest area to 2,347 hectares across nine group members, while effectively balancing both economic and environmental objectives.


Seminar on SGEC Project Certification in Nagano Prefecture

On October 17, 2024, the "SGEC Project Certification Seminar" was held at the Josho Shinrin Center in Nagano Prefecture, supported by the Josho Shinrin Ninsho Kyogikai, the Josho Shinrin Promotion Association, and others. This was the first-ever seminar focusing on Project Certification. SGEC/PEFC Japan participated in the event in as an advisory and gave a short presentation about Project Certification. Mr. Akihiko Abe, representative of Yuzu Planning, delivered a presentation titled "Utilization of Certified Materials Associated with Specific SGEC Projects." The presentation illustrated case studies and provided a detailed explanation of how to obtain certification in practice.
Over 90 participants attended the event, both in- person and online. After the presentation, many questions were raised, and several companies expressed interest in individual consultations, signaling a growing interest in Project Certification within the construction industry.

SGEC/PEFC Japan Tree-Planting Event Featured on MAFF Official YouTube Channel

The 6th SGEC/PEFC Japan Tree-Planting Event held on October 19, 2024 (Saturday) at the SGEC-certified forest in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, was successfully completed.
The event was filmed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' official YouTube channel, "BUZZMAFF," and the featured video can be viewed here.
It was an inspiring day filled with meaningful forest conservation efforts, as 55 passionate participants united in their commitment to the environment.
Heartfelt gratitude goes to the supporting organizations and all the participants who contributed to making this event success.

The 7th and 8th Sessions of the "SDGs Company Visit Program" Were Held

The "SDGs Company Visit Program'" was conducted on October 24, 2024, with 9 students from Kanazawa Nishikioka Junior High School in Ishikawa Prefecture as their field trip.
The students asked many engaged questions, including those about child labor and the details of certification standards, demonstrating their genuine interest and curiosity.
Another school visit was made on November 1, in response to a request from Tanashi Daiichi Junior High School in Nishitokyo City, as the school is particularly focused on SDGs initiatives. A lecture was given to 9 students on the relationship between forest certification and the SDGs.
In addition to focusing on SDGs, the program focused on the importance of forests, the pressing issue of forest decline and its impact, and the forest certification system that contributes to achieving the SDGs, with an emphasis on SGEC/PEFC Japan's initiatives.

PEFC General Assembly Adopts Revised Forest Management Standards for EUDR Compliance

The PEFC Alliance Online Meeting was held from November 11 to 14, 2024, with the General Assembly meeting on the 13th. During the meeting, the work plan and budget for fiscal 2025 were approved, and the revised forest management standard for EUDR compliance (PEFC ST 1003:2024) and PEFC standards related to REDD II (EU Directive 2018/2001 on the promotion of energy from renewable sources) were adopted. Additionally, there was a report regarding Greece's intention to join the PEFC membership.
